Bagi rekan-rekan yang baru mau memulai membuat situs blog sendiri menggunakan WordPress, saya bisa memberikan saran tentang plugins WordPress terbaik. (Meski saya juga pemula lho… Hehe)
Yang terbaik disini adalah berdasarkan manfaat dan fungsinya jika dipasangkan pada situs web. Paling tidak sudah memberikan manfaat agar situs kita keliatan lebih baik. Berikut ini adalah daftar plugins WordPress terbaik (versi saya):

Saat ini saya masih kebingungan bagaimana caranya menampilkan statistik kunjungan web saya menggunakan plugins stats-nya WordPress. Kebetulan themes yang saya pakai ngga support widgets (dan saya sudah cari-cari scriptsnya ngga ketemu2). Di bagian adminnya sudah muncul jumlah kunjungan, tapi gimana cara menampilkannya di situs saya? Jika saya pakai aplikasi statistik web fasilitas tempat saya hosting (MWN menyediakan awstats), saya baca petunjuknya katanya ngga aman untuk publikasi ke umum, meski sepertinya bisa dirubah file konfigurasinya agar statistik yang ditampilkan hanya item-item tertentu saja… Ada yang mau membantu?

WordPress Plugin Generator

Andrew Rickmann recently launched a neat new site called Fun With WordPress to showcase some of his WordPress projects.

One of the first tools he has published is called Fun With Plugins. The tool acts like a plugin wizard, and after you answer several questions, the tool generates a downloadable plugin file.

One of the things I like about this tool compared to similar ones is the automatic namespacing, and support for some of the more advanced things plugin authors take advantage of including localization and admin menus. Future versions promise Ajax support, style support, client side scripting, and an automatically generated WP Extend readme file.

Wordpress Plugins for the Admin Side of your Blog

For those who are not completely happy with the usability or the look and feel of the back office in their blog, there are a few plugins around, compatible with or made for Wordpress 2.0, that rework or enhance the admin area. I’ll name :

Paged Comment Editing

By default, “Manage Comments” only list the 20 last comments. What if you were on offline holidays for a month and have a blog that receives quite a few feedback ? This plugin allows browsing of older comments with paging through them.

Cat 2 Tag

If you create a lot of categories, this plugin makes selection easier when writing a post : a handy “tag cloud” avoids cumbersome scrolling through a long category list. There is also a fancy “suggest category” feature that proposes categories as you type them.

Wordpress Admin Drop Down Menu

The lazy and the productive will love it : you can go from any to any admin page without having to stop by the “top level” page first. For instance, no more loading “Manage” first , and then “Comments”, since all admin links are available in a CSS driven drop down menu (demo). Admin menu the way it was meant to be (and even compatible with Tiger Admin)

While adding no particular feature, this plugin completely revamp the admin part of your blog by heavily tweaking the CSS, giving your admin pages a brand new look (for Safari, Camino and Firefox only)

If you are using a plugin that adds functionnalities or redesigns the admin interface, feel free to pimp it in the comments. Also, I advise plugin authors to update their plugin descriptions over at WP-Plugins.net once the administration pages will include “Wordpress 2.0″ in the compatibility check list.

“Stop comments” plugin and “Take down blog” plugins for WordPress

I recently ran into a couple of situations where I wished I could have stopped comments on my blogs without having to lose any of the other settings. A recent comment flood attempt comes to mind.
Dougal came up with the wonderful Spammer Tar Pit plugin to temporarily stop the floods and that plugin gave me some ideas that I put together into another set of plugins.

The “Stop Comments” plugin temporarily turns off comments for your whole blog without affecting individual settings for each of the posts. In other words, if at some time you want to stop people from commenting on your blog for a certain period of time, simply activate this plugin and all comments are dropped with a polite message. Once you are ready to turn them on again, simply deactivate this plugin and you are done.

The “Take Down Blog” plugin is a one liner. If for some reason you want to prevent people from reaching your blog, just activate this plugin and your readers will get a polite message asking them to come back soon and nothing else. This could be further refined with html pages and such.

Both these plugins can be downloaded here. Installation is as simple as copying the contents of the zip file to your wp-content/plugins directory.
